After the Reno: Finishing Touches of Design

As you already know, Myers Constructs, Inc., can assist you with a full spectrum of design-to-build services, taking your project from concept through to completion. But what you may not know is that we can also assist with interior design and decorating – the finishing touches of your project.

Typically, we finish a project, leaving it freshly painted, and you have a new room to decorate. But you may not know what to do with that new space, or you may move all of your old belongings back into the room when a decorating tune-up might be in order. Good design of finishes and furniture can make your reno project even better!

We are qualified design professionals, and we follow design trends closely. A big part of how we design a room is with an eye towards the room’s final appearance. We don’t just drop a kitchen or bathroom into the space; we think about how the furnishings will be laid out, how you will feel using them, and how all of the elements will work together when the space is complete.

Just the other day, our design associate, Carolyn, was meeting with our window treatments contractor at a project we just completed. Next, we will be helping to sort the client’s living room function and furnishings for them by installing a fireplace, locating a flat screen TV in a whole wall of bookcases, and helping with selection of furniture.

We can happily assist with any of the following post-reno decorating tasks:

Lighting – Most people don’t notice a great lighting plan, but they always notice a bad one. Symptoms of bad lighting include:
lighting that causes shadows in areas where you need light (for example, recessed lights located too close to wall cabinets causing a shadow on the counter below)
Lighting spaced too far apart causing uneven light
recessed lights too close to a fan causing a strobe effect when the fan is on
lack of lighting in closets or incorrect type of lighting in closets that can be a fire hazard

A great lighting plan includes:
sufficient lighting for the specified use of a room, such as a kitchen or work room
ability to control light (dimmer switches)
multiple types of light in a room to allow for different tasks within the same room
specialty lighting; a great fixture to highlight and let all other fixtures disappear.  For example: find an amazing pendant light or chandelier, then, if more light is needed, use recessed lights to fill in because they disappear into the ceiling.
a scheme that defines the style of an otherwise plain room
the ability to highlight heirloom furniture pieces you want to incorporate into the design

Furniture selection – Most homeowners aren’t aware of the variety of furnishing solutions available to them. Furniture should fit the room (no more oversized black leather couches!) and function in a way that allows you to enjoy the room.

Sometimes our crews build furniture for our projects. We’ve made many custom tables built to fit into a specific space. This means you are not constrained by standard available sizes. We can also build a piece that matches or complements the other finishes in the design – for example, a custom table in a kitchen that has the same top as your kitchen counters.

In other cases, furniture is either custom made by a vendor, purchased off the shelf, or it is a piece the homeowner already owns and wants integrated into the room.

We can help with furniture selection, layout and sizing to fit a room.

Color consultations – Often times, it’s the right shade of color that can make a room sing.

Wallpaper/fabrics – Ditto! Splurging a little on these two can make a room jump to the next level.

Window treatments – There are a world of choices. Selecting the right window treatment is like choosing the right cut of dress or suit. It makes the room. A poor choice can make an otherwise lovely room look hinky!

Move in/Accessories – We can help you find the right size rug for a room. The appropriate piece will anchor the furniture and define seating areas.
