Aging In Place
Aging in place. That’s a heavy phrase. But the fact is that many of the people I know are thinking about either their parents or themselves aging. Some folks have moved from thinking about aging to actually feeling it!
While most of us aim to stay healthy, eventually some physical limitations begin to affect our quality of life. For me it became ‘real” when losing weight became harder, and I got my first progressive eyeglasses. Ouch! How’d THAT happen?
Our design/build remodeling company re-tunes people’s homes to work better for their owners. Your home should fit the way you live. That includes how you want to age.
At my house I now keep some exercise equipment in my sunny remodeled den. For me, relaxing and exercise happen as a regular part of everyday life in this new room. I can look out the window, listen to music or watch a cooking show while I row between 30-45 minutes every day. Often I have prepared a pot of dinner to bubble while I am exercising. With this simple renovation, my house has been re-tuned to how I want to live. I’m healthier because of it and yes I did lose a few pounds!
The other day we had a call to the office from a woman. Her husband is dealing with Parkinson’s Disease. They have a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, house and she needs his bathroom to function better for her husband as he ages with this condition. She felt the room shouldn’t look like a hospital bathroom. This homeowner’s list of needs for the room included larger entryway door and shower openings, shower seating, issues of counter and switch heights, handles vs knobs… The gist is that with our thoughtful renovations we can both update this bathroom and make it accommodate its owner’s needs.
These homeowners are taking charge of their home. They feel their home should accommodate their family’s needs as they age. They are planning renovations around these developing needs. I’m very happy she called us to help re-tune her home.
