Think You Need an Addition? Think Again.

We often receive phone calls from folks who think they need us to build them an addition for their home. I wanted to share my perspective as a design/build remodeler with you about this: you shouldn’t build that addition before you maximize the space you already have!

Now don’t get me wrong. We like nothing better than to build stuff. The bigger the home-remodeling project, the better! And new construction in the form of an addition is great. Since we usually are working on the older home, it’s a nice contrast to work in a new “plumb, level and square” new space.

But the truth is that most of the folks who call us thinking they need an addition really don’t. What they do need is a whole-house accounting of how they use their space, what works and what doesn’t. More often than not, we can find them the space they need within their home’s existing footprint. This is much cheaper than building a small, brand-new building and sticking it up against your existing house so that it’s seamless. Because, let’s face it, that’s what an addition is.

So what’s the key to making your home’s existing footprint work better? Good design.

Typically, the problem is people have too much stuff, or they need better storage for their stuff. Another problem is rooms that only do single duty. Any room can do at least double duty with good design. For example:

Your den or office can also be a stylish guest bedroom.
Your kitchen can also be a great family room.
Your bedroom can have a master suite.
Your hallway can house the laundry close to where you need it.
Your bathroom or patio can be a vacation getaway.
Your mudroom can be a pantry or laundry room, too.
How about a sauna or gym at home instead of an expensive membership elsewhere?

Most folks will also benefit from a redesign of their furnishings. You know those big black leather couches from your first apartment? How about that cheap shelving unit from IKEA that’s falling apart? Face it, you probably have some terrible furniture choices that, if corrected, could help you find the space you need.

So, when you think you need an addition, call us. We are always happy to discuss them – but don’t be surprised if we suggest some other things first.
