Get the Lead Out!

The entire Myers Constructs, Inc. Production Team will spend the day on Wednesday taking an EPA certification class regarding the new lead laws that go into effect in April.

All contractors of any discipline that disturb more than six square feet of area in your home, are required to be certified in the new regulations. They must take new precautions on projects in homes and other buildings built before 1978.

In addition, all construction and contracting companies must be registered with the Feds for lead certification.

Homeowners: Make sure the contractors you hire are compliant with this new law, especially if you live in an older home! More details to come on this topic…

Construction Pros Who Study/Think

At our company, we are curious. We are always on the lookout for new and better ways of doing things.

In the modern world, many of the old ways of building no longer work. The building materials of old are no longer available. People live in their homes now very differently than they did 20 to 50 years ago. These changes are even more apparent when we work on an 80 – 100-year-old home. Kitchens are no longer in the shed out back to prevent fires from consuming the whole home. Bathrooms have moved from the back yard or back porch into the sleeping quarters and near new kitchen locations inside, thanks to indoor plumbing technology — which is amazing if you think about it.

Myers Constructs Eyeing B Corp. Status

Last week, Tamara and Diane attended a B Corp workshop at Wharton Small Business Development Center. The next step is taking their online audit/survey to see where our company falls at this time. Once we see where we stand, and make any necessary adjustments, we’ll apply for B Corp status. We want to do this because it’s a quantifiable third-party assessment of the good, sustainable business practices we employ. It means we treat employees, subs and customers well! It also means we are integrated into a U.S.-based (and soon to be worldwide) B Corp community that supports other B Corp businesses.

Find out more about it at bcorporation.net.

A Serendipitous Find at The Philadelphia Home Show

At the Home Show last week, we saw some nice, new products, including energy-efficient heating plants. These new hot water boiler systems can make hot water for heat and for domestic use, they are smaller than what you have now, and they are 95% or more efficient!

We also found that one of the window suppliers we use offers a 10-year warranty on its product! This was news to us — and good news, at that — since a set of their doors we installed seven years ago has water-damage issues. We have contacted their offices to see about getting the prob fixed!
