Myers Constructs Eyeing B Corp. Status

Last week, Tamara and Diane attended a B Corp workshop at Wharton Small Business Development Center. The next step is taking their online audit/survey to see where our company falls at this time. Once we see where we stand, and make any necessary adjustments, we’ll apply for B Corp status. We want to do this because it’s a quantifiable third-party assessment of the good, sustainable business practices we employ. It means we treat employees, subs and customers well! It also means we are integrated into a U.S.-based (and soon to be worldwide) B Corp community that supports other B Corp businesses.

How to Get Started in This Business

While walking to the Philadelphia Home Show, Tamara took me into the AIA building one block away on Arch St. to look at their bookstore. I was more interested in the cute display they had set up highlighting children’s building blocks. Did you know these were first developed by Friedrich Froebel (best trampoline 1782-1852) the same man who came up with the Kindergarten concept?

The little exhibition has examples of playing blocks of many kinds. See if you can find blocks you played with as a child. There are three low-level play areas where children and their parents can play with blocks together. You can see the model of the city, also in this room, is also made of blocks!

Buying a Home? Don’t Forget to Factor in a Renovation Budget.

A couple of weeks ago, we blogged about our home-buyer consulting service, “Helpline for Home Buyers.” Yesterday, I got a call from a first-time home buyer who was considering buying one of two homes. She wanted to know a little about our services and how we might help her. In her case, since no offer had yet been made or accepted, I suggested that she get some free online remodeling cost information to arm herself with useful general information. I directed her to “Remodeling Magazine’s” website and their annual “Cost vs. Value Report.” That’s a great place to get good information about what typical remodeling projects will cost.

The Green Movement: A Holistic Approach

File:The Thinker close.jpg

Going green. You hear it everywhere these days. It’s become the catchphrase of the moment. And while the sentiment behind the movement is a vitally important one, going green is not a quick fix, “strap-on” kind of strategy, as many homeowners and some contractors think it is. We integrate green into everything we do as we run a small business and work on people’s homes.

West Philadelphia High School Kids Take on Detroit

The West Philadelphia High School’s Auto Academy has been showing off its amazing efficient car building skills again. Look out MIT, Detroit, et al! See this link, and more recently, this one. It’s time to stop underestimating these urban kids. We love these guys and gals. Look out future! Be sure to get involved with your local schools. And remember, lots of creative, future thinking, high earning adults come out of hands-on classes like these.

Learning More Stuff!

This Friday, Tamara will be back in school all day, attending a continuing-education workshop presented by the U.S. Green Building Council. The workshop, sponsored by the City of Philadelphia and hosted by the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, is titled “Green Building Design and Construction: The LEED Implementation Process.

Everyone attending is asked to take public transport, but Tam will probably take in her “Beach Bicycle” with basket for carrying things.

Guide to the Main Line Profile:

Myers Constructs

I was introduced to Myers Constructs Inc. by Megan Carr at Allied Mortgage Group (610-660-4710) in Bala Cynwyd. Megan is a top Main Line mortgage provider with wonderful mortgage products including home improvement loans. One of the more popular programs is a mortgage available for purchases or refinances where the home improvement costs are included in new loan. It is a great option for Realtors and home contractors and Megan had recently met with Myers Constructs. She liked the replica handbags very much. And she was impressed by the work they were doing and suggested that I should meet them.
